THE CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE CHANGE FOR THE CLIMATE..

Climate change is one of the biggest threat to the global future. It is our reality and its effects are already being felt by the world. The rising levels of sea , heat waves , changes in rainfall pattern and melting of glaciers are few of the visible effects on the world.

Climate change has been a constant topic of discussions and debates for over a decade now. I recently had a very insightful discussion with few of my friends when we came across the rock revetment on Southsea beach. The climate change is causing rise in temperature resulting in melting of sea ice and rise in the sea level. The rising sea levels could lead to submerging of the Portsmouth city along with few other coastal cities in UK . Thus various methods are being taken by the government to prevent or minimize effects like coastal erosion. Methods like rock revetments are being used to fix the land- sea boundary or to reduce the impact of coastal erosion. The Southsea Coastal Scheme is the UK's largest local authority-led coastal defenses project and it will improve the seafront for future generations, while protecting the community and preserving the area's unique heritage.

THE CLIMATE ACTION TALK SERIES :

The talk series by  Carrie Fung has been very intriguing and informative . Though I knew the basic steps taken in India for the climate change, it was interesting to have a discussion about the climate change and the schemes that are being undertaken in different countries. The most intriguing part about the talk series was the concept of Doughnut Economy by Kate Raworth. The economic prosperity of the world depends on human and natural wellbeing.  The theory of the Doughnut formula is a change of economic model with a goal to eradicate global poverty with vigilant use of natural resources.

According to Kate Raworth to achieve this there should be a major change in the working style of government where welfare of human beings and nature is balanced with economic development. The Doughnut Economics name is derived due to its shape which resembles a doughnut consisting of two concentric rings. One ring is of a social foundation which ensure that everyone could have the life essentials and the other ring is of an ecological ceiling to ensure that natural resources are not depleted because of the humans . Between these two sets of boundaries lies a doughnut-shaped space that is both ecologically safe and socially just a space in which humanity can thrive.

Retrospection  , Introspection and Extrospection :

To quote Mr Barack Obama ,  “We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last one that can do something about it.”

Even though are various schemes and methods undertaken by the government to reduce the effects of climate change and improve the ecological conditions but the its pace is being extremely slow. We need to raise our voices and urge government to take bold and fast actions regarding the climate change. We also have to put our individual efforts to improve our ecological conditions by adapting a ecofriendly lifestyle and focusing on sustainable living. There are plenty of ways to do the bit like buying locally sourced food, reforestation , reducing the use of plastics etc. We need to make smart decisions about energy consumption and waste management . One can adapt the “ Waste Hierarchy “ system which promotes Reduce , Reuse and Recycle .

We need to adapt a lifestyle where we should refuse to buy the products which are not essential and reduce its the consumption . Reuse the items till it can be used and dispose the products which you don’t require in a recycling centers . A small action by every individual will definitely contribute in betterment of human lifestyle.
